Sharpening the Axe

When we need a break it is worth remembering an appropriate little story…

The seasoned Lumberjack did not appear at work one day, surprising everyone.

It was unusual as this week counted towards measurable cutting quotas.

No matter, thought his ambitious colleagues, there will be more return for us…

The next day, the seasoned Lumberjack arrived early and had already cut 2-days quota by midday.

The others, impressed, though somewhat annoyed and envious, asked why he had not come in the day before.

I decided to take the time out to sharpen my axe, came the reply.

Most people on holiday will still take their business to the beach and often it takes a week just to wind down.

The secret is to plan your time in advance…what you are going to do and what you are NOT going to do…and that must include staying away from negative news.

Then you relax, and start the important process of sharpening your own axe…

Put simply, wherever you go make certain your mind is there too - and not back at the office.
