Developing Consciousness

One evening Yen Tzu came across one of his students sitting on the great stonewalled edge of the Academy. Though the student seemed to gaze into the distant mountainous horizon it was clear from the perplexed face that his mind was focused elsewhere.  Yen Tzu enquired as to what was troubling his mind.

 

‘I learned today that each of us has the power to repel wealth as much as we do to attract it,’ replied the student. ‘That the very factor of having it can change our focus to how we can then keep from losing it. Though I already have money, I never do seem to have enough. For my part I find it hard to keep from worrying about money whether getting, keeping it or losing. And after today’s lesson I am now concerned that my thinking will actually repel what wealth I do have.’

 

‘Then let me first share a story,’ Yen Tzu offered as he sat down on the wall beside the student and enjoyed the open vista. ‘Four merchants met on the road to Tai Kwok Market. After initial pleasantries they began to ask each other why prosperity shone on some and not others...
