Against the Crowd

A bookseller once told me that the majority of customers browsing in bookshops are other authors or potential writers seeing what other authors have written or researching on what to write.

Similarly, it seems that most businesses browse the Internet for similar products or services to their own whenever they are planning a 'new look' website.Put simply: the crowd follows the crowd: convinced that if everyone is doing it - whatever it is - then it must be the right thing to do.

There are 2 things that successful entrepreneurial leaders know to achieve their goals...

1. What everybody else is doing is NEVER the reason for doing anything

2. Because everybody else is doing something is the best reason for NOT doing it.

The key is to 'test' that you are not following the herd by asking honest questions:

  • What are you doing because you have always done it that way?
  • What are you doing because it conforms to your industry?
  • What are doing because your competitors are doing it?
  • What are you doing because of fear of peer disapproval?

Innovative thinking and innovation leading to alternative directions makes you stand-out and outstanding.

Which direction are you heading?
